Book Review: Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins

Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins
Published 29th April 2014 by HarperTeen
Paperback, 400 pages
Synopsis:
It’s time.
Evil is running rampant and sweet Anna Whitt is its target. Nobody knows when or how the Dukes will strike, but Anna and her Nephilim allies will do anything necessary to rid the earth of the demons and their oppressive ways.
The stakes are higher than ever, and Anna is determined that the love she feels will be her strength, not a liability. But trying to protect the ones she loves while running for her life and battling demonic forces proves to be perilous—especially as faces are changing and trust is fleeting. When the Duke of Lust sends Anna’s great love, Kaidan Rowe, to work against her, Anna must decide how much she’s prepared to risk.
In the most sensual and fast-paced installment yet, Sweet Reckoning brings all the beloved Neph together one last time to fight for their freedom.
My Thoughts:
My bittersweet heart feels nothing but euphoric joy. Sweet Reckoning—which should be renamed to Sweet Feels…okay so maybe that sounds like an uber cheesy erotic novel but yeah, feels—has given me everything from intense sadness too immense happiness. I don’t think my heavy heart can take all of the emotion.

As the saying goes, everything comes at a price and it really does fit in with this series. Throughout the books we’ve seen our main protagonist overcome many problems but it doesn’t always end well. In this epic finale Anna has to decide whom she’s fighting for and what she’s willing to give up in the process. I’ve really enjoyed watching Anna blossom from the weak, timid little girl we first met into a hardcore all singing, all dancing badass!

Because this is the finale book in the trilogy I don’t want to give too much away by rattling on. However, can we just take a moment to discuss the ever so sexy and endearing Kaiden Rowe? Like Anna, he has taken on many challenges throughout the trilogy. We’ve seen him question his purpose and deny himself of what is natural to him in order to save the people he loves. As far as character development goes I think Wendy nailed this one perfectly.

Truth be told, I never thought we’d see the day that Kaiden and Anna have the chance to be happy together but it seems that Ms Higgins ships them just as much as we do. Enough so she’d give us what we all want and damn, I’m not one to read and tell but… it was mighty fine! How can something be so sensual yet so sweet at the same time?

In this action packed, mind blowing conclusion we see Anna do everything she can to not only save the Nephilim but also mankind from the terrible demons that prowl the earth and revel in all things evil. The book isn’t always serious though, we get some heartwarming and humorous scenes that’ll either have you giggling like a schoolgirl or shedding a tear or two. Sweet Reckoning sees the return of many favourite characters as they join together in order to help Anna rid the world of all things horrendous. This trilogy is so much more than your average paranormal/fantasy novel and I think that the finale was definitely worth the wait as it was everything I could’ve hoped for.

Book Review: White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout

White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Published February 25th 2014 by Harlequin Teen
Kindle Edition, 400 Pages
Synopsis:
One kiss could be the last.
Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.
Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.
But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.
My Thoughts:
Jennifer L Armentrout is slowly but surely becoming one of my favourite authors. Up until this year I hadn’t read anything by her but now I’m onto my fifth book and I must say, I’ve loved all that I’ve read by her so far. Isn’t it great when you discover a new author and immediately enjoy their work? I cant decide which series of hers I like the most but White Hot Kiss is definitely one of her best, I cannot wait for the next installment in the series.

I was over the moon when my request for this was accepted on Netgalley a couple of months back. I’d heard nothing but good things about the book and thought it had an interesting premise. I’d been putting off reading it but decided now was the time to pick it up. One thing I love about Jennifer’s writing is the fact that its so easy to read. Once I got into this book I absolutely devoured it, I probably would’ve read it in one sitting if I didn’t have anything else to do. It was simply impossible to put this book down.

A half demon, half gargoyle female protagonist with a lethal kiss, what more could you want from a paranormal? Oh yeah, I forgot, this is a JLA book we’re talking about so of course there is plenty of man candy to sink your teeth into. I’m torn between whom I like better, Roth or Zayne? Zayne or Roth? Both? I don’t know how she does it but Jennifer always manages to create desirable characters that you hate to love.

If you’re already a fan of Jennifer then I know you’re going to love this book as it is on par with her previous work. But if you haven’t read anything by her yet then I’d recommend that you start with this series. The plotline is well thought out with explosive chemistry, laugh out loud humor and an ending that’ll leave you wanting more. There are some serious WTF moments throughout the book but don’t worry too much, I’m sure it’ll all work out in the second installment…hopefully.

Stone Cold Touch—the second book in this series—will be released later this year on October 28th so you have plenty of time to devour this book as I did. And for those of you who have already read White Hot Kiss; I’d like to hear your thoughts on the book and whether you’re also excited for October.
